Everythings a given when it comes to muscle. the bigger.the better. :) If u take off ur A/C & power steering, u can get some juice out of that. If u make the stroke of ur camshaft bigger.you can make a 318 into about a 360 or a little bit more. Because l know increasing the stroke of my 302.it will increase to about a 351..355. Your carb also makes a huge difference. Along with the amount of fuel ur distributing. Too much & u will flood it..too little & it wont start. But if u get just the right amount between good & TO MUCH.it will be perfect. l suggest buying a book on how to rebuild ur engine. it will tell u how to get max performance & do things such as increasing that cam stroke. ;)

There is too much to list in a simple reply. Your best bet would be to either go the ur local library & look up issues of MOPAR magazine, HOT ROD & the like & read up on 318 build ups. The 318 can produce a lot of power but it has it is limitations & the magazines explore both sides of a build up in detail. They also will give u the best combinations of manufacturers to build ur engine. I've raced both dirt & asphalt track, circle, oval & road course. Get the mags & read & really get to understand the motor. The motor is only part of the equation.

What I've yet to understand is why so many people start with the motor. Yes, the motor is exciting & makes the car faster when paired with the right gear ratio. BUT, unless u have the BRAKES to stop all of that additional horsepower, u r screwed, hard. Making it go is easy, stopping it safely is more important.

Have fun.

you may wish to step back and evaluate

To really produce a lot of HP will take some $ for your 318

Mopar performance has a 360 300 hp crate motor that is cheaper than a 318 rebuild

think about it

the 318 is a high revving motor, kinda like a 340, only not as powerful. 1st, the engine needs to breathe, A 650 cfm 4 barrel carb, mid rise intake, K&N air filter, install ur headers..A PURPLE Mopar cam, will help a lot, & finally, if u want the car to be real quick, say 0-90 mph, change rear gears. l will assume ur Duster probably has 3:23 gears in the rear end. If u simply change those gears to 4:10, that alone will make it feel like u added 100 horsepower. P.S.. if u can not find 4:10's,,,,3:93 is r almost as good. Now there r tons of things u could do in addition to these modifications, having the cylindars bored, changing crankshafts, installing a blower & so on. l just approached this from the most BANG for ur $$$$$ without getting too crazy...Good Luck
